This was running around in my head as I coughed myself to sleep last night: what would various geek titles (of TV shows, movies, maybe books) represent if they were used for non-geek subject matter?

So, here’s your midweek mission: pick a few geek titles, and pitch me their ungeeky cousin concepts, here in the comments.

I’ll start with a couple examples (feel free to use the same titles):

Doctor Who – Think “the lone ranger” crossed with “doctors without borders” and a dash of “House” on a feel-good bender. Man loses his medical license for doing the right thing, but still wants to help people, so he travels the globe administering care and solving medical mysteries. Who was that masked surgeon?

The Cape – Clearly “the Cape” in this title is a geographic feature. Think 90210 with a rocky coastline. Old money collides with hard-life fisher families.

My kid needs me back, so that’s as far as I can go right now. Over to you!

Babylon 5 – A privately owned resort somewhere in the Caribbean. Follows the drama of the staff and guests as the owners resist being run out of business by the high-priced corporate resorts.

    Heros:

A family sitcom centered around a sandwich shop in Brooklyn. The show gives us the trials and tribulations of a family trying to live in today’s world being supported by whatever money the shop can generate. Toss in a rebellious teenage daughter, a precocious 12 year old son and a mother-in-law living with them who thinks her daughter could have done better with her life.

Three fantastic and very different Babylon 5′s already. I’m loving it. :)

    Battle Star Galactica:
Poorly translated title of an Asian Idol knockoff. Think Miss Universe beauty pageant but with nothing but the “talent” bit.

    Star Trek:
Cross country rally race with aging “celebrities”. Its like Amazing Race meets VH1′s Where are They Now.

    Eureka
A serial (prime time soap opera) TV program about the drama of small town life in Eureka California.

    This is fun.

Star Wars – D-List actors in skimpy outfits play paintball in a byzantine architectural landscape. One team wins by shooting a target not much bigger than two meters.

The Matrix – Think “A Beautiful Mind” with a less happy ending. A mathematician descends into madness as he tries to derive a proof for the existence of God, i.e., the Architect of the Universe.

    • http://ApopheniaEvolved.com Dusty

Hmm, I feel like your Matrix might still be too geeky.

The Matrix – A middle age math teacher falls in love and begins a journey of love and family that you will never forget.

For some reason the comments ate this section in my other comment because it thought it might be unapproved html.

I think that doctor show pretty much exists as the manga Black Jack.

Smallville – a drama/soap opera about a group of good-looking teens growing up in a small Kansas town. (Hmm…)

Batman – a former major league baseball player, recovering from both a career-wrecking injury and a divorce, takes a coaching job at his former high school while trying to raise his daughter, Robin.

Blake’s 7 – Regina Blake is the new girl in school, and head cheerleader Sara Vilan has it in for her. But Reg and an unlikely band of TV-friendly outcasts plan to turn the schools social pyramid on it’s head. Think Revenge of the Nerds combined with Glee.
