Today, I bunt. I’ve got layout on my mind, in the sense that I need to get back to doing that, rather than blogging.

But it occurs to me that by this point, if you’re following this blog you know why you’re coming here.

Why is that? And what should I be writing about to keep your particular itch scratched?

    You’re an oasis of calm civility and reason in the churning maelstrom of the ever flame-prone rpg-focused internet? Something like that.

    Also – it’s kind of like you’re sort of slowly writing a guidebook about the business and PR side of RPGs and I find those posts the most interesting. (Even though – or maybe especially – because I’m just a dabbler/hobbylancer in that sphere.)

    I’d be really interested in reading a post about community-building. Judging by the size and tenaciousness of the Fate and SOTC online legions, you seem to have a knack for something that most everyone else in the business finds very difficult. Although, I suspect that’s not really something that can be described in a useful fashion.

    Here’s a couple of things that would interest me:
    1) What games are you most excited about right now and why, and by games, that could be tabletop, computer, console, card, board, whatever.
    2) More about the nuts and bolts of dividing up Dresden Files into 2 volumes. Was that inspired by Hero Games 6th Ed.?
    3) How has your gaming life changed as a parent? Do you plan on introducing your child to gaming, and if so, what kind of games do you think will the next generation be playing? Will they be starting on The Princes Kingdom, Monsters and Other Childish Things and Mouse Guard?

    I like what you have to say, no matter what the topic. Plus chances are generally good that it’ll be a topic of interest to me anyway, and your perspective is always authentic and interesting, so … I read your blog.

    As to what I look forward to, well I do find your look at your own business (both as a publisher and art manager/layout) to be interesting (not that I think I’ll ever really make use of the advice you give personally), and you do raise some interesting points with the philosophy of gaming.

      All the more reason why Origins is where it’s at. There’s a lot of sitting at bars, chatting.

      At least there CAN be. The second Origins I went to damn near lost the vibe due to an egregious amount of (frankly, unwelcome for me) karaoke in the bar that’s usually reserved for the hanging out and chatting thing.

    I read this because of the GMing section in SotC, frankly. I’m not the main GM in our group, but I’m likely the most popular for one-offs and mini-series. It’s nice to see a refined version of what I’ve been doing, especially since it’s helped make what I do that much better.

    Beyond that, as a professional artist I’m always interested in that side of the business. A discussion of the rates artists can expect in the indie RPG industry would be great too (I know the rates are generally not high, but that’s never been the point).

    So art, writing, game design, layout. Also recipes and the joys of being a fellow Marylander are always welcome. Toss in interesting links and it’s all a go.

      If we’re going for a wish list: stuff about games/game ideas that aren’t Dresden Files but fleetingly possible future EHP products.

    Fred, I’ve heard about how you use interviews in Inspectres instead of the confessional. A post on that would be really cool, since I’ve heard good things and I love Inspectres but also know confessionals are hard for players to get used to.

    I bet folks would be curious about any similar twists/variants you use with your favourite RPGs, too.

    I’m personally way more interested in publishing-as-practice rather than publishing-as-business and, while I know those are strongly connected in the case of Evil Hat (a publishing business, duh), I would be interested to hear you talk some about the current and future state of game publishing as a place where a diverse number of publishers, many of whom are not really running businesses but doing something else, are participating and what that landscape looks like.
